History & Folklore:
Intriguing folklore surrounds how vanilla first came about in the world. One popular tale begins with the ancient Totonaco Indians of Mexico, near present day Vera Cruz. According to mythology, it was said that Princess Xanat of the Totonaco people fell in love with a mortal. Because her father forbade this, Princess Xanat and her lover ran to the forest so they could be together, but were later captured and beheaded. As their blood splashed to the ground, the vine of the vanilla plant began to grow.
